Weddle Descendants

The Weddle family tree I have been working on has nearly 1200 people. For simplicity’s sake, I am listing only our (my) direct patriarchal descendants.

Hans Georg Weddle (7th-great-grandfather)

Hans Georg was born around 1650 in Saxony, Germany. He married Anna Barbara (last name unknown) and fathered at least one child. I have found no records for his time and/or place of death.

Hans Michael Weddle Sr. (6th-great-grandfather)

When Hans Michael was born in 1690 in Handschuhsheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, his father, Hans, was 40 and his mother, Anna, was 39. He married Anna Margaretha Schlepp on January 24, 1713, in his hometown. They had six known children in sixteen years.

Hans Martin Weddle (5th-great-grandfather)

Hans Martin was born on April 24, 1718, in Handschuhsheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He had one son (mother unknown) and one daughter with his wife, Elizabeth Kathrean Weiss, between 1742 and 1764, both of whom were born in the United States. He died on October 17, 1783, in Botetourt, Virginia, at the age of 65.

Benjamin Weddle(4th-great-grandfather)

Benjamin was born in 1742 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He married Anna Maria Eiler, also from Lancaster, in 1770. They had 13 children in 25 years. (One every two years; poor Anna!) In 1774, he fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant. He died in April 1807 at the age of 65, and is buried in Floyd, Virginia.

David Weddle (3rd-great-grandfather)

When David Weddle was born on May 1, 1774, in Somerset, Pennsylvania, his father, Benjamin, was 32 and his mother, Anna, was 23. He married Margaret Morricle and they had eight children. He then married Catherine Stigleman and they had six children together. Yikes! Fourteen children! Our branch of the family tree is descended from his marriage with Catherine. He died on October 22, 1859, in Floyd, Virginia, having lived a long life of 85 years, and is buried in Floyd, Virginia.

Ira Weddle (2nd-great-grandfather)

Ira was born on January 22, 1829, in Montgomery, Virginia. When he was twenty, he married Nancy Thompson and they had three children together. Nancy died two months after the birth of their son, Periday, most likely from childbirth complications. Ira remarried four years later to Susan Jane Lancaster and they had six children, from whom our family is descended. He served in the Confederate Army (private) during the Civil War and was held as a prisoner of war. All his children save one were born in Virginia. Sometime between 1870 and 1878, Ira moved to Indiana, where his youngest son was born. He died on February 13, 1894, at the age of 65, and is buried in Boone, Indiana.

Homer Oliphant Weddle (great-grandfather)

When Homer Oliphant* Weddle was born on September 29, 1878, in Pittsboro, Indiana, his father, Ira, was 49 and his mother, Susan, was 47. Sometime before 1904 he moved to Nebraska, where he married Albinnia Marsh on November 9. They had two children during their marriage. Between 1930 and 1935, Homer and Binny divorced and he moved to California to live near his daughter. He died on February 22, 1948, in Santa Barbara, California, at the age of 69, and is buried in Piru, California.

*I’ve tried, but so far I can find nothing about the unusual middle name of Oliphant.

Merritt Elsworth Weddle (grandfather)

Grandpa was born on April 21, 1911, in Tekamah, Nebraska. On June 2, 1933, he married Clara Luretta Chilcoat in Omaha (can that be right?), Nebraska. They had four children in 10 years. He died on January 3, 2000, in Fremont, Nebraska, at the age of 88, and is buried there.
